Funny thing. I fell asleep, too, fully clothed, still in my socks, on top of the covers, in that dim room with half a sandwich in my belly and a million things I should have been doing, some of which might have meant the difference between life and death.

Maybe it was the night I’d spent with Ruth. Sleepovers weren’t my thing. Truth be told, it wasn’t just that no one wanted to overnight in my white elephant rock star tour bus. It was me. I wasn’t an overnight kind of guy.

But maybe I was becoming one. The sleeping hours next to Sethu were some of the most profoundly restful of my life. I woke to find Sethu snugged up behind me, knees tucked behind mine, arm across my chest, face in the nape of my neck, where her breath tickled.

I lay awake for a long, slow, warm, syrupy moment, eyes closed, taking stock of the unprecedented circumstances and distantly understanding that this was all unwise, and reveling in it. Sethu smelled good. It was the fresh-baked version of the sour smell I’d gotten a noseful of that morning when I’d first seen her: a warm smell with floral notes, and beneath it, a very human smell indeed.

She was awake, too. Her hand began to stroke my chest in small, gentle circles, and her breath got hotter on my neck. Then her lips brushed the skin and kissed me. Softly, then firmly. Then a little nip of her square little teeth.

I caught her hand in mine. It was hot and small, and it squeezed me back hard.

“Sethu—” I started.

“I know,” she said. “I know. But let’s. Let’s anyway. It won’t hurt anyone, and it’s something I need.” She kissed the back of my neck. “Danny would have been fine with this when he was alive. He certainly won’t care now.”

We were in his bed. She was his wife. Ethical nonmonogamy was a fine-sounding concept, but I’d always preferred the grand American tradition of serial nonmonogamy. It was safer. You didn’t have to talk about your feelings quite so much.

She kissed the back of my neck again, and her hand escaped mine and began to trail over my chest and stomach. Someone moaned. It was me. I turned around and found her lips.
